Meadow Blends
Why Use a Blend And Not a Mix?
Our blends are designed with balance in mind. Some wildflowers are more dominant than others and can crowd out other species.
So for us its not just about putting a mix of attractive wildflowers together, its also about matching up species that will look and work well together, and then getting the amount of each wildflower in the blend just right.
How Much Blend Will I Need?
This depends on which type of meadow you choose.
Annual meadows should be sown at the rate of 3 grams per square metre. So for instance, if you have 6 square metres to sow you will need 18 grams.
Perennial meadows should be sown at the rate of 2 grams per square metre. So as an example if you have 15 square metres you will need 30 grams.
If you are unsure of how to work out the size of your area we have some tips on how to do this in our How To Guides.
When to Sow Your Meadow
Sow annual meadows in early spring.
A good indicator of when to sow your annuals is just after you see the first signs of garden regrowth which normally occurs between March and April in the UK.
Perennial meadows are best sown in the autumn.
This allows the meadow to germinate and establish beyond the seedling stage before winter sets in.
Perennials are winter hardy so sowing in autum gives them a head start the following spring.
Annual or Perennial?
Annual wildflowers, as the name suggests, will last for one season. Annual meadows are quick to establish and give high visual impact. Sow in the spring and have your meadow that summer.
Perennial meadows consist of hardy wildflowers that will return year on year. They take longer to establish and although you may get a flush of colour in the first season they will come into their own over several years.
